Hey, beauties! Happy Monday  I hope this post finds you in good spirits. Today I wanted to do something a little different and instead of a makeup review or beauty post, I wanted to share with you my thoughts on the newly released Netflix Original Series “She’s Gotta Have It”.

She's Gotta Have It.
She’s Gotta Have It.

The series is a reboot of one of my favorite directors Spike Lee’s 1986  film of the same title. There were so many elements of the series that I thought Spike did an exceptional job portraying. Like the movie, the series remained true to its main characters essence. Our protagonist Nola Darling played by the beautiful DeWanda Wise definitely steals the show. Whether you support Nola’s choice of sexual freedoms or lifestyle one thing that we all can agree upon is that no matter what she faced Nola stayed true to herself. Strong. Independent and most importantly Flawed. Click To Tweet I loved that Spike portrayed a female lead with all of these characteristics especially in the Trump era America that we are currently living in. If you’ve seen the movie I’m sure that you weren’t a fan of Nola’s suitors but the series does a great job of giving the viewer a  deeper insight into these characters both old and new. Mars with his comedic flair and devotion, Greer’s spontaneity, and James stability.

All very different men yet each sharing the same desire of capturing or as Nola put it “controlling” her. Can you say ego tripping?  The series also did a great job with shedding light on other issues that are prevalent in today’s society such as the Black Lives Matter movement, gentrification effect, and  body identity and self-love dynamics the character Shameeka struggled with during this season.  So I hope you do the right thing (No pun intended lol.) and go check out the first season of “She’s Gotta Have It”  because a girl can have it all, can’t she?

Have you finished the first season?  I’d love to hear your thoughts.
